H.E. President John Mahama Appoints COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu as New IGP
In a significant development within Ghana's security sector, President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), succeeding Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. This decision was officially announced on Thursday, March 13, 2025, following consultations with the Council of State, in line with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution.
COP Yohunu brings to the position an extensive 40-year career in law enforcement. Throughout his tenure, he has held various leadership roles within the Ghana Police Service, earning recognition for his dedication to crime prevention and national security. His appointment comes at a pivotal time as the police service undergoes critical reforms aimed at modernization and enhancing public trust.
The swearing-in ceremony for COP Yohunu is scheduled for Friday, March 14, 2025. As he assumes office, expectations are high for him to lead initiatives that will bolster professionalism within the service and address contemporary security challenges facing the nation. The government has expressed confidence in his ability to steer the police service towards greater efficiency and public confidence.
The outgoing IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, appointed in 2021, was known for implementing key reforms, including community engagement initiatives and internal discipline measures. While the official statement did not specify reasons for his removal, sources suggest that the decision is part of a broader restructuring effort within the Ghana Police Service to infuse fresh leadership and drive the reform agenda.
This leadership change occurs amidst legal actions by IMANI Ghana and security expert Professor Kwesi Aning, who have filed a suit at the Supreme Court seeking to restrain the President from removing the IGP and other heads of security agencies until an ongoing case is decided in May 2025. The plaintiffs argue that such removals before the court's ruling would be unjust.
As COP Yohunu steps into his new role, the nation anticipates strategic measures to enhance public safety, combat crime effectively, and further the ongoing transformation of the Ghana Police Service.
