The Arrogant SRC President of UEW, Asare Francis, Refuses to Hand Over Power

The Arrogant SRC President of UEW, Asare Francis, Refuses to Hand Over Power

At the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) exists to safeguard the interests of students, ensure continuity in leadership, and strengthen democratic accountability. Unfortunately, recent events have cast a shadow on this noble tradition.

It has emerged that the outgoing SRC President, Asare Francis, has refused to hand over power to the newly elected administration even after three weeks of election. This development is not only an act of arrogance but also a direct violation of the SRC Constitution, which clearly outlines the processes of transition and succession.

The refusal to hand over power sets a dangerous precedent for student leadership. Leadership is not a personal possession but a responsibility entrusted by the student body for a defined period. By holding on to power beyond his mandate, the outgoing president undermines democratic values, disrespects the student electorate, and disregards the very constitution he swore to uphold.

The students of UEW deserve better. The refusal of Asare Francis to hand over power is not only unconstitutional but also an insult to the principles of transparency and democracy. True leadership is measured by one’s ability to serve faithfully and to step aside gracefully when the time comes.

It is time for the relevant authorities—both the SRC Judicial Council and the Dean of Students Affairs—to intervene decisively. The will of the students must be respected, and the constitution must be upheld. Anything less would be a betrayal of the democratic values UEW stands for.

UEW students are watching closely. History will not forget.
